Q3 Config Generator gets to 60k!
Jul 20, 2008 - 6:44 PM - by Sar
Sometime later today or early tomorrow will see the 60,000th visitor to the Q3 Config Generator since it's inception in August 2001.

Doesn't sound like an awful lot in that timespan, but I'm quietly proud that this simple tool I created nearly 7 years ago while trying to learn some basics of PHP coding has since helped that many Q3 gamers.

It has links in the official Urban Terror online manual, the new Quake Live beta forums, and if you Google for "Quake 3 config" it's the #1 result in all of Google!

At least I managed to do something useful in my 12 years online

Slight backtrack...

You may have noticed some errors on the site today (if you were here earlier) as my webhost has been tinkering with security settings, which should hopefull be sorted now

Anyhoo, as far as Ubuntu is concerned, I've got it running in Virtualbox under WinXP, and tbh it runs better there than it does natively - it runs fullscreen with XP behind it and you'd never know the difference until you shut down

Ok, so there's no fancy graphics effects on the desktop, but the sound works perfectly in all apps and there are no problems with drivers causing the monitor to blink on and off incessantly - which I have concluded is an Nvidia driver issue. It never happens in XP, and the vesa drivers usable in linux don't show up the same problem, so it must be a bug in the drivers from Nvidia for Linux and Vista...

Screw it, I've gone back to XP.

I had done a complete system wipe, dumped Vista and re-installed both Ubuntu and XP from scratch on a nice new 500Gb sata drive I bought especially for them.

Got Ubuntu installed ok, and re-installed OSS and removed alsa, as it doesn't support my soundcard (an X-Fi Platinum Fatal1ty Champion series card), but it seems completely random as to whether sound will either work at all, or it'll work on the desktop in Totem etc, but flash video will not play any sound or neither will work, or both will. Then it'll change again when I reboot.

Grrr.

It's a damn pity, because I'll miss using Ubuntu for day to day stuff, and using XP purely as a gaming OS, which was the original plan, but Ubuntu has had to be knocked on the head until such time as alsa properly supports an X-Fi card such as mine.

Things I liked about Ubuntu:

Virtual desktops
Compiz-fusion (especially having my four desktops rotate on the gl cube!)
Apt-get & repositories (why oh why can't Windows have something like this?)
The terminal (sometimes it's just damn quicker typing the program's name rather than hunting through menus)
Gparted (superb disk partitioner)
Gnome (such a nice and neat front end, really will miss it)
Rythymbox & Banshee (still undecided which I liked the best)
Better security

Things I disliked about Ubuntu:
You couldn't set the amount that the mousewheel would scroll universally throughout the OS - that's a royal pain.
Mouse sensitivity was off and could never get just right.
Constant sound issues (as above).

Overall it's a fantastic OS, it's just I need sound as most of my day to day pc use needs sound (either for music or watching online video etc). Damn shame, but I'll be keeping a close eye on Alsa Project for X-Fi support, as OSS is pretty scattershot.

It's a pain, because my Wubi installation worked perfectly, but none of the 3 re-installations since have worked as well.

Still here :)

No, it didn't screw up my games partition, so all is well

So Linux now has 30Gb dedicated to it, which will increase by a shitload more once I buy a new 750Gb HDD for games & media!

I'll just transfer all the current games across to the new hdd and increase the ext3 partition to fill up the remaining 170Gb

Really liking Ubuntu tbh. It's clean, efficient and reminds me of Windows XP a lot, in a good way mind!

It however, like Vista, and unlike XP, has that annoying monitor blinking bug, which causes this damn Viewsonic monitor (VA2012w) to blink on and off for up to a minute whenever resolution is changed. The same thing happens in Vista, but hasn't happened in XP yet, which is odd.

Maybe time for a different monitor, or buy 2 Ati 3850's and crossfire them on this mobo of mine...

Tis an odd one.

Biting the bullet

As I write this, gParted is re-sizing my games partition in order for me to properly install the full distro of kubuntu, the KDE variant of ubuntu.

ATM the installation of ubuntu is the temp version that you can install from within Windows, so I'm going to go the whole hog and devote 30Gb of hdd to format partitions for a full installation.

Or it may get more if gParted fucks up and wipes all my games - all 180Gb of them
